Code of conduct
We want this space to feel welcoming, comfortable, and safe for everyone who wants to attend. That is what lets us relax and have fun together.
Consent always applies
There are many ways to ask for and receive consent, verbal and nonverbal. Whatever you use, ask clearly and get a clear "yes" back. If you do not know someone well, default to asking out loud. This covers asking for a dance, and also close embrace, dips, lifts, and anything else that changes the dance.
Consent given once does not apply forever. Someone may be comfortable with something in one dance and feel differently later. Ask each time, and err on the side of over-checking.
If you get a "no," accept it with grace and find someone who is excited to dance with you.
Be aware of how you affect the people around you
Good floorcraft so you do not bump into or injure yourself, your partner, or anyone nearby. Mindfulness about your energy and how you approach people. Attention to body language.
Intent versus impact
We can have the best intentions and still cause someone discomfort or harm. Repairing that harm always comes first. Everyone makes mistakes and we extend grace for that, while making sure the person who was harmed is taken care of. Repeat offenses are not okay and will be dealt with more seriously.
If someone tells you that you made them uncomfortable: take the feedback without defensiveness. By speaking up, they are showing you respect and trusting you to do better. Ask what they need from you now and going forward, and think about how to bring your actions in line with your intentions.
If someone made you uncomfortable: you are empowered to hold your boundaries and speak up. If you would rather not do that directly, come find one of the hosts.
Harassment is not tolerated
This includes verbal abuse and unwanted physical touch. The hosts may ask anyone to leave whose behavior is inappropriate or unsafe.
Alcohol and drugs
Please do not attend while under the influence. If you drink, drink responsibly. The hosts may ask anyone to leave whose behavior is disruptive or unsafe.
Photos
We occasionally take photos and video for Facebook and Instagram. We do our best to announce it and to designate photo and no-photo areas of the floor so you can opt out. Other people may take pictures at other times. If you ever see a photo of yourself you want taken down, tell us.
Be good neighbors
If you walk through the neighborhood on your way in or out, please keep the noise down.
Canine code of conduct
Dogs are welcome. Bring yours only if they get along with people and other dogs and can respect the dance floor.
We as hosts put a lot of effort into this environment, and we ask you to co-create it with us: come with an open mind, assume positive intent, and be welcoming. Talk to people you do not know and ask them to dance. If you are experienced, dance with newer folks and bring them into the fray. That is how we all learn and grow together.
This code of conduct is a work in progress and we may revise it at any time.
